Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

A Healthy School consists of students who respect one another, who will not bully one another, are open to developing healthy relationships with one another, and will show empathy to fellow students and support them, recognizing their hardships and tough times. These students, in growing or honing their social and emotional awareness skills, will also succeed educationally and academically, and will go on to colleges or universities to enhance their employment and career opportunities.

Information from CASEL.

Goals of SEL:

·        Promote students’ self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship, and responsible decision-making skills

·        Improve student attitudes and beliefs about self, others, and school

·        Better test scores, more confident students with a greater drive for success

Benefits of SEL:

·        SEL provides a strong foundation for students to not only excel academically, but to be more flexible socially, allowing them to better accept critiques from their peers and learn from others.

·        SEL classrooms generate less emotional distress in the classroom. This is a direct result of students empathizing with each others feelings and learning strong listening skills.

·        The safe learning environment naturally results in higher test scores and better grades.

·        High-quality SEL programs positively contribute to school success, social development, crime prevention, and economic performance by developing strong self-awareness in students which,in turn, feeds their drive to succeed.
